The acceptance of a request to donate blood stem cells marks the beginning of a closely coordinated medical process. The donors are supported through the entire process, from the first tests and check-up right through to follow-up care. This support keeps donors and recipients safe.
The services provided in connection with donations ensure that blood stem cell donors receive optimal medical and organisational support. Long-term follow-up instils trust and yields important findings for future patient groups.
Blood stem cell donations from Switzerland remained in high demand in 2025. The key metrics show an increasing trend in all areas.
Collection procedures with Swiss donors
105 collection procedures, of which 3 cord blood donations
→ Ever-increasing demand
Transplant procedures in Switzerland
357 transplant procedures in total
198 matched unrelated donor transplants, 159 matched related donor transplants
240 CAR T cell therapy treatments
→ Light increase in total number of procedures; decrease in donations from unrelated donors, increase in donations from related donors
Donor search for Swiss patients
290 new searches initiated
→ Slight increase
Blood stem cell donation is always voluntary and never remunerated. Donors receive a small gift as a token of appreciation.
In developing the new donor gift, the intention was to create a symbolic expression of gratitude that could find a place in the daily lives of donors. The aim was to produce a gift that would accompany blood stem cell donors in their post-donation lives, something that would both serve a practical purpose and be a visible reminder of the admiration they inspired. The cohesive design takes its cue from the organisation’s corporate identity, displaying a clear central and uniform structure.
The gift box contains a wooden cutting bord, a Victorinox peeling knife, a thank-you card and a Coop gift certificate. This selection symbolises the “gift of a slice of life”, its elements were deliberately chosen for their associations with quality, daily life and Switzerland.
The new donor gift is understood not as a trophy but as a friendly presence in the daily lives of donors. The entire process – from ordering to wrapping to shipment and documentation – has been handled internally since October 2025. This increases uniformity and simplifies the process, ensuring consistency of implementation.
The “be the match” teaching material was developed in cooperation with LerNetz to serve as instructional material for upper-level secondary school (baccalaureate school). It is intended for teachers to help them cover the topic of blood stem cell donation in depth and in an age-appropriate manner. Previously only available in German, a French version of the material was released in the summer of 2025.
The availability of the French-language version facilitates access to the teaching material by additional schools and teachers in Western Switzerland. This expansion of potential users will help establish the topic of blood stem cell donation in education more broadly, providing objective information about the topic to young people as they approach adulthood.
